Book Review: 3x3x3 by Sharada Kolluru

3x3x3 by Sharada Kolluru is a fascinating crime thriller with a gamut of themes that are inevitably intertwined amidst its cast of characters that hail from various backdrops of life. So far the novel has garnered attention from hardcore crime thriller readers, and is well-received among them.


Usually thrillers with murder and crime angles are fast-paced, however this novel with stretching over 400 pages is optimally chugging ahead, with no hurried twists and plots. Sharada has kept the characters in close loop, though they are as different as earth from the sky. In total three main characters, along with a long list of auxiliary characters, that ultimately drives the plotline to its final climax of sheer and unpredictable twits.

Once in the book, there is hardly look back, fast-paced narrative, engaging storyline, and unexpected twists will keep readers on the tenterhooks. It can be concluded before finishing the book as a captivating murder mystery with a cinematic quality, effectively blending action and thrill with emotional depth.

The plotline enjoys intriguing personalities of three characters…Peddana –an aging drug dealer. DCP Vasudev – the right cop guy. Suryakanth – an intellectually clever guy working with the drug dealer. Surya loses his brother and his equations change forever with other characters. It is a cleverly woven plotline that turns out in an engaging plot.

The story intricately weaves together the journey of a seasoned police officer, a retiring drug lord, and a resilient speedcuber against the backdrop of Hyderabad. The title itself, referencing a Rubik's Cube, underscores the multifaceted challenges the characters face. The narrative effectively shifts between past and present to provide character backstory and build suspense.

Readers consistently mention the quick pace of the book, making it a page-turner. The characters were well-developed often described as intriguing and complex, with well-placed motivations that add depth to the narrative. A close look reveals that the book captures the essence of a Bollywood story with its drama, entertainment, and unexpected twists. While being a crime thriller, the book also explores themes of love, friendship, and family relationships, adding layers to the plot.

Sharada's writing style is captivating and compelling, with meticulous attention to detail. She skillfully unveils the dark pasts and mysteries of each character. The inclusion of Telugu phrases and cultural references adds authenticity without alienating other readers. In nutshell, "3x3x3" is a well-crafted and enjoyable crime thriller that offers suspense, excitement, and emotional depth, making it a recommended read for those who enjoy the genre.
