Book Review: Reflections on Societal Challenges by Kanagiri SN Prasad

If the one side of the Indian society brims with unparalleled diversity and shows the virtues of unity, the other side is equally full of societal challenges in its own shades. Educationist and visionary Kanagiri’s new book takes a sharp and contemporary stance on some of the recently borne up issues grappling India as a large, but also in particular to his home state: Telangana.

Like his other books, it also sings about  reforms that are needed in our society, however a close look reveals that it is focusing on a gamut of issues that seem  quite personal to every reader. While pinpointing the issues, he is also suggesting solutions that could turn into reforms. In nutshell, the book provides –as its tagline says – inputs for an actionable framework.

Divided into eight sections, the book neither criss-crosses nor overlaps with any of the issues given in it. In the first section, the author takes a dig at schools operating with small budget, ultimately suffering with quality education. Further, he discusses important points on grooming and then stress-free education along with inclusion of Yoga in the schools.

Section two is about women empowerment, he aptly bring to notice the safety issue of women at hospitals…may be in concern for that case of Kolkata. Another jaw-dropping issue that he highlighted is the app loans through cases of a few people. It’s a concern for Indian government to look into it as it has so far trapped many innocent people and some lost their life due to pressure. The case of stray dog menace is another contemporary issue that needs immediate action from the government bodies across India. That case of a small boy being attacked and killed by stray dogs was a sorry state of our vigilance. Tragic yet true! This needs to be stopped. Though the appeal of the book, and the cases it is representing is national, yet the author has kept many aspects in the limit of his native state. Part concerning, part motivating, this is another scintillating work by the author for improving society for betterment of all people at all levels. This time, there is hardly any coverage for political reforms…as the book screams loud for societal changes than anything else.

This is one of the insightful books on challenges faced by our society today. The author urges all citizens to act their part to make this nation great from all aspects. The author’s approach to all issues has been simple, didn’t confuse anyone at all, he used simple language for better quality with ample references. This book rather can be read by many irrespective of their preferred literary choices.
