Book Review: Island Game of Modern Life by Himanshu Kumar Sah

‘Island Game of Modern Life’ is a rivetingly fantastic novel with a blend of more than a few themes that grip and define our lives in the world. The narrative of the story shuttles between life on earth and afterlife moments in Yamlok. This is not an outright novel about a particular character with all cynosures; rather it presents a range of sub-themes through its gamut of characters that meet in Yamlok.

Inspired by the author’s grandpa, who is believed to return from Yamlok at the age of twenty-four, the novel teaches about contemporary life of a human being that is grappled by virtues and deeds like fame, money, satisfaction, recognition, and love. The novel is being narrated on the scaffold of four people’s life stories: Sukesh, Sanchita, Kapil, and Siddhant. Siddhant is the grandfather of the author. These four people die in an accident and reach Yamlok. They used to work in the same company on the earth. Since all are young, their death has left many aspirations and desires of them incomplete on earth. They all repent at the action of Yamraj. They plead to go back for their own various reasons.

Yamraj decides to play a game with them, and whosever wins will be sent back. Here onwards the novel turns slightly spiritual and it begins doling out sermons on life that we humans live on earth. However, as through the maze of different colours of lights and intriguing patterns that it represents, all four people get on the work. But they have ultimately to find the hidden pearl. What could it be and where? The hunt for the same transports readers to all characters life stories and their deeds at particular situations.

The subject matter and concept of the novel is fresh, unique, yet intriguing. You need to read it consistently with close attention to all characters’ life events. The overall experience is a delightful blend of gentle humour, empathy, and refreshing honesty. The book delves into highs and lows of human experience – from the magical moments of birth to the heart-breaking farewells of death, from the courage displayed in the face of chronic illness to the unsettling selfishness witnessed in the times of suffering.

‘Island Game of Modern Life’ is a captivating exploration of the human condition, expertly crafted by Himanshu. With its blend of spiritual elements and poignant storytelling, this book offers a compelling read that will linger in the minds of readers long after the final page is turned.

Poem by Rabindranath Tagore: Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high Where knowledge is free Where the world has not been broken up into fragments By narrow domestic walls Where words come out from the depth of truth Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit Where the mind is led forward by thee Into ever-widening thought and action Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake. One day while herding her two cows back home, she stumbles upon some city people enjoying the picnic in the valley. She is enthralled to see them well-groomed and rich. She craves to be one like them and among many other things of their, a blue frilly umbrella catches her attention. She begins craving for it. On the other hand, the city people get attracted by her innocent beauty and the pendant in her neck. The pendant consists of leopard’s claw – which is considered a mascot widely in the hills.
