We are back
with another author interview. Today, with us, we have Binary – the author of
‘Six, Five’. In this interview, Binary talks about his writing aspirations, and
the route to getting his book published, and his love for detective fiction.
Stay on...while we chat with him.
What inspired you to write this book? Any tales to tell…
I’ve always
been a fan Sherlock Holmes, be it the novels, the movies or the Tv show. This
novel was simply an attempt to bring that ‘detective vibe’ into a more
relatable setting, i.e, a college love story.
Would you decode the title – Six, Five in short for our readers?
It’s just a
wordplay using the novel’s two main leads, Violet and Victor. They call each
other ‘Vi’, and ‘V’, which are the roman letters for ‘Six’ and ‘Five’.
Are you more inclined towards detective fiction? How did you develop the backdrop for this book?
Like I said,
I’ve always been a fan of the Sherlock Holmes novels. And I suppose you could
say that I’m more inclined towards detective fiction compared to the more
popular genres, like fantasy. As for this book, I incorporated the detective
fiction genre into a simple college setting, hoping to make the characters more
relatable to the readers.
What else drives you other than writing fiction?
Lots of things
actually. Throughout my life, I have jumped from several different hobbies. One
time, I became so interested in Origami, then I got interested in reviewing
movies, then programming… the list is endless and inconsistent. This book was
just a product of another interest I happened to acquire. Perhaps, I’ll soon
find something I’m really good at.
How did you find your writing chord, or were you a born writer?
There’s no
such thing as being ‘born’ a writer. At least, I don’t think so. As for me, I
got into writing because I have a story to tell, just like everyone else. And I
want to tell that story the best way I can. To do that, I have to figure out
what the best medium (the medium I’m best at) to tell it through. That’s one of
the reasons I wrote this novel.
How do you handle the response of this book, especially from your friends?
It was nice to
hear all their positive feedback, but I know that their opinions can be biased.
That’s why I’m always looking for a genuine review from a reader.
What are some of your favourite novels and authors?
Frankly, I
haven’t read A LOT of books. But among the ones I have read, my favorites would
be ‘The Idiot’ and ‘Crime and Punishment’ by ‘Fyodor Dostoevsky’. ‘Bad blood’
by ‘John Carreyrou’. And of course the Sherlock Holmes novels by ‘Sir Arthur
Conan Doyle’.
What was your biggest learning experience throughout the publishing process?
Honestly, I
don’t remember much of the time I spent writing ‘Six, Five’. Rather, it was the
proofreading process that was unexpectedly and painfully long. So, I guess I
have learnt that the editing process is not as easy as it seems. Not at all.
Looking back, what did you do right that helped you break in as a writer?
Nothing
really. I guess I just decided to try writing a novel, and eventually I did it.
Any best piece of writing advice from your side that we haven’t discussed?
There are
billions of books in this world, and the chances that a first time author’s
book is going to make it through that rubble is slim. But I say, write anyway.
Because you can never know the end result without trying.
Where do you write from? Do you go to some specific place, like beachside or into the hills?
My room is a
comfortable enough spot for me to write. I can sometimes be too lazy to get up
and search for inspiration.
Something personal about you people may be surprised to know?
Absolutely
nothing. I’m as ordinary and unexceptional as the average human on this planet.
Any future books that you would like to discuss now?
I have no
plans to write another book at the moment.
