Book Review: Monkey Trouble and Other Grandfather Stories by Ruskin Bond

This book is a compilation of three novellas, specifically written for children below fifteen. Let’s see all the stories one by one. First in the line is Monkey Trouble. This story is about Tutu, a female monkey. Ruskin’s grandfather buys it from a street juggler for three rupees. Though initially grandma is against keeping this unstable pet at home but with time she accepts her. Tutu indeed is a troublesome monkey. Its mischiefs and wrong adventures not only cause havoc at home but also in the city.


Tutu’s main victims are aunt Ruby and her fiancée Rocky, and to some extent grandma and uncle Benji. Once Ruby and her fiancée go to buy a ring for their marriage and then soon the boy (young Ruskin) follows them secretly and behind him comes this cheesy monkey. In the jewelry shop, this monkey creates commotion and runs away with a pearl necklace. After then, almost half city chases her and in the end it throws away the necklace in a stream. Somehow the jeweler gets hold over that precious piece of jewelry. Next the monkey creates trouble at the wedding ceremony and runs away with the top pillar of the wedding cake. People run after her but to no avail. There is more to her mischiefs, and you can grab the comic book if you want to have this refreshing story in your book treasure.

The book is written in comic format, full of colorful illustrations and all. Other stories in the book are Eye of the Eagle and Special Tree. Actually Eye of the Eagle is a story of a young boy named Jay fighting a ferocious eagle to save his lambs that go out for grazing. This story has already been covered, so you can read here.

Special Tree is just another name for the famous story ‘The Cherry Tree’. This story is about planting trees and what all it takes to look after them. The dedication and attention Rakesh offer to this tree is mesmerizing.

Like other all Ruskin Bond books, this too is refreshing in mood and is well-suited for children of primary grade. If you love reading stories to your children, go nowhere and stick to Ruskin Bond books.
