Author Highlight: Sunil Bhatia Discusses his Book ‘My Featured Friends & The Book of Poems’ and Stories from Life

It’s time for another author interview. Today, with us, we have Sunil Bhatia, he lives in Mumbai, India.

Kindly tell us a bit about you.

I am a Singer, Songwriter and Composer based out of Mumbai having released two Bollywood songs (As a Composer/Lyricist). Am also an Indie Artist having released songs and performed on a few occasions (Blue Frog Mumbai, Hard Rock Café Pune). An hotelier by profession having done Hotel Management.

Now, tell us what’s your area of interest (genre) when it comes to writing novels? Is it generalfiction or something else that you want to reveal later with the upcoming books?

Have never thought of writing based on any specific genre as such. I am more of a free spirited one who just goes with the flow. Though certain genres like Humor, Sci Fi, Occult, Supernatural and Mystery seem appealing.

Do you think writing a book from the comfort of bedroom or study room is possible?

Have written this one mostly from the home computer in my bedroom. Some of the poems from the work desk after office hours.

Where do you write from? Do you go to some specific place, like beachside or into the hills?

Currently home. Sparingly from the office desk (after office hours).

Did you do proper research before penning down this book?

Yes, wherever and whenever required for certain factual details.

What inspired you to write this book? Any tales to tell…

The 1st page is what actually happened. The pigeons used to fly in my bedroom and look at me. One of them sat on me while I was still half asleep. The rest from the part we start speaking is fiction. Certain other instances of taking the Pigeon to the Animal Clinic, going out to a distant village with friends is also true. The poems were written over the years and are the result of life’s experiences and how I’ve felt about certain situations at different points of time.

What was your biggest learning experience throughout the publishing process?

The importance of using the correct grammar, spellings and punctuation. Also, how not to be repetitive with ideas or phrases.

Looking back, what did you do right that helped you break in as a writer?

Having a story to tell which is relevant in today’s times. Also the ability to create intrigue with each chapter which would make one inquisitive to know what happens in the next page. The poems are across different genres so it adds to the overall spectrum of thought and emotion which the book facilitates. Am also not much into reading of Novels as such (am more observational and like watching TV/Web Series and movies to gain insight. Also people and chatter around the workplace or otherwise gives fodder for thought), so have no influence of any author on my writings. Have hopefully given something that’s original.

Any best piece of writing advice from your side that we haven’t discussed?

Writing whatever comes to one’s heart and mind without much thought into structure or linearity of the story or poems is what this book is all about. A fair dose of humor, mystery and self-analysis triggered by words and situations have perhaps been added to allow reader engagement to grow with every page and chapter.

Something personal about you people may be surprised to know?

I am also interested in acting, dramatics and film-making which I’ve been studying over the last few years.

Any future books that you would like to discuss now?

Have a few ideas in mind. Too early to discuss. May look at starting writing part 2 of the story book if nothing else comes up first as I am having several poems still to be published which would fit in the poems section.

Poem Summary: Where The Mind Is Without Fear by Rabindranath Tagore

Poem by Rabindranath Tagore: Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high Where knowledge is free Where the world has not been broken up into fragments By narrow domestic walls Where words come out from the depth of truth Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit Where the mind is led forward by thee Into ever-widening thought and action Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake. Short Summary: This poem is written by Rabindranath Tagore during pre-independence days, when India was a colony of the British. The underlying theme of the poem is absolute freedom; the poet wants the citizens of his country to be living in a free state. According to the poem, we see that the poet is expressing his views there should be a country, like where people live without any sort of fear and with pure dignity…they should ...
