The Mystery of the Graveyard Gold by B. Fuddle is a short light children’s detective novel backdropped against the cosmopolitan culture of Bangalore. If you are familiar with Enid Blyton's ‘The Famous Five’ series, chances are that you will fall for this novel.
However, there is some stark difference between this novel and ‘The Famous Five’ series. Often those stories are set in rural county side or secluded islands where the gang of children takes pleasure in small experiences of cottages, lonely roads, fields, boating in the river and so on. Well, this one takes on criminals and investigates the lost treasure right at the centre of the city’s hustle bustle. The novel features three junior school-going detectives: Aarava, Karthik, and Asha.
As the novel commences the author brushes up the basic background of all three characters. They live in the same colony. And to your surprise Asha is that pesky little sister of Aarav. She peeps everywhere…into many matters, rankling his brother and even Karthik. The little girl turns the novel into hilarious tone.
At first Aarav hates Karthik for being Scratchmidget. This seems a new invention of word by the author. You may Google to confirm the results, chances are that you may not find its proper meaning.
Anyway, in a heat of bet, Aarav and Karthik go to a graveyard behind a bus station at night. There they stumbled upon a bag and a few drinkers. Here onwards, the trail of investigation kicks off. The boys find an antique vase full of gold coins. Upon researching it comes out that the coins dates back to 14th century of Vijayanagar Empire. However, sights aren’t as plain as they look from distance in crime thrillers.
The boys begin their hunt for veracity of the treasure they have. Meanwhile elders and Asha got an air of their secret club. Soon all three decides to investigate the origin of the graveyard gold.
They are chased, their hiding place ransacked – but the trio didn’t jitter away. They smartly plan but, at times, make blunders yet keep backup plans and remain alert. The novel is fast paced and has a set of thieves that is searching for children and vice versa. The ending of the novel was unexpected. When it got exposed as how and why the gold landed in the graveyard, it will surprise you for sure.
The storyline was kept simple and unpredictable. Since it’s aimed for children, hence, the author didn’t use hardcore bloodshed or rigorous crime incidents, it was light right from the first page. This novel introduces AKA: Asha, Kathik, and Aarav. So be prepared for more novels featuring this detective trio.
