Well, the
question that this story possesses is that when a person sits on the seat of
jurisdiction, does he dole out the decision without any influence or in the
sway of nepotism? The answer lies in the story Panch Parmeshwar by Munshi
Premchand.
As the story
goes, Jumman Sheikh and Algu Chaudhary are good friends since childhood days.
They support each other in many ways. Algu is famous in the village for wealth
while Jumman Sheikh being educated is known for knowledge and wisdom. From the
village land recorders to postmen, many seek advice from Jumman Sheikh. He has
many who favour him except a few ones.
Jumman’s Aunty
(Khala) is getting old so she willed her property (a piece of land) to him,
since she has no relative other than Jumman Sheikh. As soon as the registration
of the property is over, Jumman and his wife begin neglecting Aunty. This
caused her grief and she calls out for a village Panchayat. Among all the
judges, Algu is given the supreme authority, his decision will be final. Seeing
Algu as a judge, Jumman assumes that the decision will be stated out in his
favour. But he was wrong. Algu feels the responsibility of delivering
immaculate justice and as per his impulse he doles out the decision in the
favour of Aunty. Jumman is shocked to see that betrayal. Now, they both turn
sour to each other. The friendship is almost over. In addition to that Jumman
is seeking an opportunity to revenge his insult.
After a few
months, Algu is dragged to the podiums of the village Panchayat on account of
an ox fight with one of the wealthiest merchants. To Algu’s horror, Jumman has
been chosen as the supreme judge for his case. However, in this case Jumman too
feels the responsibility of delivering immaculate decision to the audience.
After listening to the case, he orders the merchant to pay the amount of dead
ox to Algu. Also, the merchant has been made to pay the fine for showing
cruelty towards animals because of that Algu’s ox died. Algu is shocked to find
the decision in his favour. He cannot believe that Jumman, who was seeking an
opportunity to pay him back, does not dole out a blind decision. After the
case, they both hug each other and say that in the heart of judges resides God,
thus doling out any wrong decision is not possible.
